British Consul Liked Nizhny Novgorod Airport But Missed a British Team
British delegation estimated the readiness of Nizhny Novgorod for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The delegation visited the construction site of the stadium at Strelka; some of the hotels and restaurants in which the FIFA delegation and soccer fans will live."This is my first time in Nizhny Novgorod. Surely, it's a very beautiful city with a growing and developing economy. The best impressions are related to the preparations for the World Cup next year. Professionalism, competence and, most importantly, enthusiasm can be felt. A lot depends on the draw and on the games, of course, but we will be very pleased if at least one of the British teams - Scotland, England, or Wales, or Northern Ireland - will play here," the head of the delegation, Minister Counsellor at the British Embassy in Moscow Jonathan Brenton said.
He said that Nizhny Novgorod reminded him Edinburgh, and had opportunities for tourism, recreation, and sports.
The Consul of Her Majesty Thomas Regan noted that Nizhny Novgorod was a very hospitable and friendly city. "The airport is one of the few airports where I felt very comfortable," he explained. He assumed that Nizhny Novgorod, will very quickly become a popular place, because it's close to Moscow.
Regan skipped to answer the question about what the city lacks at the moment with a joke about "the British team that has been selected for the games on the territory of your city". All the preparation must be done December 2 everything will be in place."
The Governor of Nizhny Novgorod region Valery Shantsev shedded light on that question. "We are now seriously engaged in the development of tourism infrastructure, he said. Our task is to increase the tourist flow by three times by 2020. To do this, of course, we need infrastructure and, above all, high class hotels for different categories of people".
According to the Volga Customs Administration, in 2016 trade turnover between the United Kingdom and the Nizhny Novgorod region was $44.9 million (29.3% growth compared to 2015). Export was $25.3 million (2.3 times growth) while imports reached $19.6 million (a decrease of 17.3%). Great Britain ranked 26th out of 143 countries-foreign trade partners of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
